United States Embassy Holds Public Lecture in Polibatam: Presenting Dr. Steve Arounsack, Lead Visual Walt Disney Animation Studios

POLIBATAM-Politeknik Negeri Batam (Polibatam) Campus hosted an event and workshop from the United States Embassy on 9 November 2023 at the Polibatam Technopreneur Center. It was in collaboration with Walt Disney Animation Studios through the American Films Showcase (AFS) Inisitis program, which presented Dr. Steve Arounsack, cultural advisor and main visual anthropologist for the Disney Animation film (Raya and the Last Dragon).

Raya and the Last Dragon is an Oscar-nominated animated film that is Disney Animation’s first feature film fully inspired by the people and culture of Southeast Asia.

At this event, the participants who attended gained skills regarding filmmaking, screenplay writing, and even watching films together. This program was held with the support of the United States Government to encourage the development of the creative economy in Indonesia and strengthen networks in the animated film industry.

“Film is a field that has enormous growth potential in America and Indonesia. We hope to see more collaboration between film companies and educational institutions in this field and other creative industries,” said the Cultural Attaché for the US Embassy in Jakarta, Emily Norris.

The participants were very enthusiastic about taking part in this event, and being able to share knowledge and experience from Walt Disney Animation Studios speakers was very useful for the participants in developing animated films in Batam.
