The Importance of Grasping How to Lift Objects Properly and Correctly
POLIBATAM- Working with an ergonomically correct body position is essential because non-ergonomic positions can cause work accidents and health problems. Manual lifting is still possible in the campus environment, such as lifting gallons of drinking water from the floor to trolleys or vice versa when distributing drinking water, lifting materials/ingredients, tools/machines in workshops/laboratories, moving inventory items and other activities. Therefore, here are tips for lifting goods/objects properly and correctly:
- Make sure the item can be held tightly and safely.
- Use both hands when lifting items.
- Avoid lifting suddenly; do it slowly.
- Bring the object being lifted as close to the body as possible.
- Use your feet for support to push up and lift the weight. Do not use the spine or waist as support for lifting.
- Do not lift by bending forward. The correct way is to bend your hips and knees, squatting towards the lifted object. Pull it as close to your body as possible. Then, lift by straightening your legs or standing with your back straight.
- Avoid twisting your body when lifting and moving items. The correct position is that the hips and legs must rotate or move from the original place facing toward the new place. Incorrect position if only the hips/waist rotate.
- Lift as much weight as your body can. If it is too heavy, use mechanical equipment such as trolleys, forklifts and other tools.
- The height of the object being lifted does not exceed eye level.
- Always try to lift weights ergonomically.
Attached is a video illustrating how to lift properly and correctly.
