The Crucial Role of Parents in Choosing Education Level
NEWS-Facing the final semester, many parents are starting to be busy choosing the level of education considered suitable for their children. As happened in June, when the registration for new student admissions or penerimaan peserta didik baru (PPDB) has been opened at all levels of education.
The research findings conducted by MarkPlus in 2021 showed that parents have a role in making a child’s decision to continue to the vocational high school (SMK) or vocational higher education level. This is because parents are starting to see that the opportunities for vocational education, both at the SMK level and vocational higher education are very wide. Children will be equipped with competent and trained competencies to make them skilled and competitive human resources (HR).
Minister of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology (Mendikbudristek), Nadiem Anwar Makarim said vocational education has an important role in the country’s development. “As included in Nawacita, vocational education is one of the government’s priority programs in producing various problem solvers for existing problems and responding to the challenges of the times,” he said.
Meanwhile, Deputy for Coordination for Health Quality Improvement and Population Development of the Coordinating Ministry for Human Development and Culture, Agus Suprapto, in the commemoration of National Family Day or Hari Keluarga Nasional (harganas) said that in accordance with the optimization of the eight family functions, parents certainly have an important role in providing direction to children to choose education according to their their passion.
“Optimizing eight family functions, including religion, socio-culture, love, protection, reproduction, education, economy, and environmental development functions to create a resilient family,” said Agus, quoted by the Ministry of Education and Culture website.
Besides, family culture in Indonesia which still includes parents in making decisions for children in terms of continuing their studies is also important. Therefore, parents also need to expand their mindset and read opportunities, as well as enrich their knowledge about education in order to make their children competent and excellent in their respective fields of expertise.
In addition, parents must also be observant in reviewing and considering decisions so that children are not trapped in continuing their studies in fields they do not like. Children need to continue their studies in the field according to their passion in order to obtain optimal results.
There are various ways that parents can do so as not to make children trapped in the situation, such as finding out many things about education levels, inviting children to communicate to find out their children’s desires and passions, and providing choices and opportunities for children to choose education according to their passions.
